A group of students from Ghent University is currently working on an innovative project that tackles the problem of drinking water scarcity. This project, called "Dewpal," will be their entry in The International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Competition. Dewpal involves the designing and printing (using a special filament that allows for binding with external proteins) of a unique 3D shape. The combination of 3D printing and synthetic biology, i.e., functionalized 3D-printed structures, has many potential applications.
Houston (Texas, USA) has been home to Jeroen Pollet since August 2011. He arrived as a Fulbright scholar; now he is an assistant professor at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), and also the director of the Formulation Development Unit at the Sabin Vaccine Institute & Texas Children`s Hospital Center for Vaccine Development.   In these roles, he develops new vaccines against neglected tropical diseases and studies the interactions of vaccine antigens  with immunostimulatory agents in relation to immune responses and vaccine efficacy.
Each one of us carries trillions and trillions of 'bugs', as Jeroen Raes (Group Leader at Bioinformatics and (eco-)systems biology lab, VIB/VUB/KU Leuven) likes to call them —micro-organisms that live in our bodies and make up the so-called microbiome, or gut flora. While these microbes have been linked to different diseases, information about which factors in a healthy individual’s diet and lifestyle affect the microbiome has remained elusive. What is the potential of the microbiota as a diagnostic solution at this time? Can we manipulate it to prevent diseases and use it to influence drug sensitivity? What are the challenges in the microbiomics field? Will we be able to develop targeted, even personalized probiotics? Is there a hype surrounding microbiomics that the public, scientists and communicators must take into account when evaluating its recent advances and future possibilities?
