Food waste is still a huge problem in Western society. In the near future, however, intelligent food packaging will be part of the solution. Not only can innovative technologies such as gas sensors and freshness indicators decrease food waste, they can also improve food safety and quality throughout the entire supply chain—from farm to fork. CheckPack, a collaborative fundamental research project headed by Ghent University, explores the possibilities of sensors in food packaging.
Under the guidance of Flam3D, the Flemish cluster association for 3D printing, 27 Flemish companies and research institutions collaborate on the realization of 'Family of the Future'. This will be a demonstration project aimed at clarifying what 3D printing technologies exist and how they can have real added value across a wide range of sectors.
Each year, more than two million patients worldwide undergo a procedure called coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). CABG is used to treat blocked arteries and restore normal blood flow to the heart. It involves grafting a blood vessel — typically taken from the leg — around the diseased area, reestablishing blood flow to the heart tissue. However, veins used for CABG offer an inadequately durable solution to coronary artery disease, and the long-term outlook is not promising. Within 18 months, 25 percent of implanted veins fail. After 5 years, that failure rate increases to 40 percent. Angioshield, a novel type of external stent designed through ANSYS' computer simulations, offers a solution to this problem.

A group of students from Ghent University is currently working on an innovative project that tackles the problem of drinking water scarcity. This project, called "Dewpal," will be their entry in The International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Competition.
